Canon unveils EOS 550D 18-MP DSLR camera; to be available by February 24 - by DeviceMag.com

According to Devicemag.com, the Canon 550D / Rebel T2i is going to be out on February 24.  Here's an excerpt:

"To be available from February 24, the new Canon EOS 550D brings with it new technologies firmly embedded in a lightweight body. Features include a newly-developed 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, and also boasts of Canon’s DIGIC 4 image processor. Shooting full HD movies is a significant aspect. Further, a 9-point AF system with an extra-sensitive cross–type point at the centre for f/2.8 or faster lenses form another addition. The new Canon EOS 550D also supports high-speed, continuous shooting at 3.7 frames per second. The maker has incorporated the iFCL metering system, which we saw first when the earlier EOS 7D model was unveiled. Another important addition is the ability to set the top limit for automatic ISO, allowing users to control the maximum amount of noise in their images. The camera comes supporting standard ISO settings of 100 – 6400, which are again expandable to 12800.  Canon has gone in for some detailing by adding enhanced in-camera noise reduction technology."

The Canon 550D / Rebel T2i is really going to be a great camera as an upgrade to the old Rebel models and for those moving from the point and shoot cameras.

Canon EOS Rebel T2i Invites Upgrade from Point-and-Shoot - by PC World

According to the article by PC World, the Canon 550D / Rebel T2i is almost like the Canon 7D but at a cheaper price.

Here's an excerpt:
"What's notable here is that Canon has taken features from its recent Canon EOS 7D -- an $1800 model-and brought those features downstream to a model half that price. The Rebel T2i uses the same 18 megapixel sensor as the 7D, but its channel reader is lower (four-channel for T2i, versus eight for 7D). Both models use the Digic 4 engine, and both have a 63 zone, dual-layer metering system. However, the T2i makes some concessions -- it can shoot at 3.7 frames per second, with a burst rate of 34 large fine jpegs, and 6 RAW images; and it has a 9-point autofocus system that's on a par with the T1i (the 7D, by contrast, has 19 focus points)."

If I'm not mistaken, the Canon 550D sensor is not exactly the same as that found on the Canon 7D.  Canon claims it has the same megapixel count, but not exactly the same sensor.  Also, take note that the Canon 7D has two Digic IV sensors, whereas the Canon 550D only has one.

Still, the Canon 550D is a great camera for it's price.

Canon EOS Rebel T2i by LetsGoDigital

"Canon EOS Rebel T2i digital SLR camera : Canon introduces the new flagship model for the Company's highly popular Rebel DSLR line: the Canon EOS Rebel T2i digital SLR camera. Today's photo enthusiast is looking for a camera that will grow with them as they learn, and that is a perfect description of the new EOS Rebel T2i digital SLR camera. Retaining all of the traditional characteristics that have made the EOS Rebel series beloved by entry-level photographers and an industry best-seller, the new Canon EOS Rebel T2i succeeds in bridging the gap between an entry-level camera and a true pro-sumer camera. The Canon EOS Rebel T2i Digital SLR camera is scheduled to be delivered to US dealers in early March."

I would have to disagree that the Canon 550D / Rebel T2i is bridging the gap between an entry-level camera and a true pro-sumer camera.  Some of the specs of the Canon 550D is close to the Canon 7D.  However, the xxD camera line still has a rumored Canon 60D which may be a lot closer to the Canon 7D.

Canon T2i: The Goldilocks of digital cameras - by CSMonitor

CSMonitor calls the Canon 550D / Rebel T2i the Goldilocks of digital cameras.

Here's an excerpt:

"The new Canon T2i falls somewhere in between a weighty professional SLR and a shove-in-your-pocket amateur camera. It focuses on the growing market of enthusiasts – people with a good eye but little training, prepared to spend money on their passion but not more than $1,000.

Due out in March, the EOS Rebel T2i gives last year's T1i an improved megapixel count, faster shutter, and stronger HD video features. Plus, fans of the T1i will be happy to learn that its simple body and clear interface will carry over to the new generation."

Why Goldilocks?  I honestly have no idea about the relation.  If you know, hit the comments.

What I do know is that the Canon 550D / Rebel T2i is going to be a great camera for beginners or those coming from the point and shoot camera category.

The new Canon EOS Rebel T2i may be the perfect HDSLR for filmmakers - by Cameratown

Cameratown has posted their initial thoughts on the Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i.  Here's an excerpt:

"It is the HD video features that should really make filmmakers take notice of the EOS Rebel T2i, since the camera features all of the important HD features found on the 7D:
  • Full 1080p HD Video at 23.97, 24.97, and 29.97fps
  • 720p HD Video at 50 and 59.94 fps
  • 640x480 SD Video at 50 and 59.94 fps
  • New 7x Crop Zoom option in 640x480 SD video mode
  • Full manual control of Aperture, Shutter, and ISO
  • External 3.5mm stereo line-in for using external microphone
  • HDMI-CEC output for connecting to HDMI ready televisions. The new CEC standard also allows basic functions to be controlled by a compatible TV remote"

I totally agree that the Canon 550D / Rebel T2i will catch the attention of film makers.  The Canon 550D is a very affordable camera with full HD capabilities.  With it's small size, the Canon 550D can be placed in tight spots to get creative angles for videos.

Canon EOS 550D (Rebel T2i / Kiss X4 Digital) Preview by DPReview.

DPReview has just posted a hands-on preview of the Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i / Kiss X4 Digital.  Find the preview here.

What's new with the Canon 550D are:
  • 18.7 megapixel CMOS sensor - almost like the Canon 7D
  • Gapless micro lenses
  • Full HD movie mode - somewhere in between the Canon 500D and Canon 7D
  • Custom ISO - now allows you to have ISO set on auto
  • New battery - this sucks since you'll need to buy new backup batteries, chargers and battery grips
  • Copyright information - can now be embedded into your images (EXIF).  Quite helpful to deter people from stealing your work.
Canon said that the Canon 550D is not meant to replace the Canon 500D.  This camera is supposed to sit between the Canon 500D and the Canon 7D.

The Canon 550D is not out in stores yet.  If you're looking for a good consumer DSLR now, you may check out the Canon 500D from Amazon and B&H Photo.

18MP, 1080p HD Movies, ISO 6400: Canon redefines the boundaries of the consumer DSLR with the EOS 550D by DPReview

Check out the press release of the Canon EOS 550D at DPReview.com.

Here are some interesting stuff about the Canon 550D:
    • 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor - it seems that MP count will simply trickle down from the higher-end models.  More MP may not necessarily mean better quality photos.  Let's find out when we get to see more sample images.
    • DIGIC 4 processor with ISO 100-6400 (Expansion to 12800) - ISO 6400 is very good.  That's a big jump already from the Canon 400D which only had maximum of ISO 1800.  Let's hope the image quality at ISO 6400 will be "useable".
Head on to DPReview.com to view the complete press release.
